Hat Yai Phuket

Hat Yai Phuket and beyond.

The bus tour from Phuket to Yai is the busiest in South Thailand, from 6 am to 9 pm (this time can be different, in Thailand time figures are floating) are connections from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 to the Hat Yai City Bus Terminal with big and medium sized coaches, vans are not predictable. Road travel time from Phuket to Hat Yai is about 6 hours and the frequency is about every half hour.

Don't use the vans which are a few minutes faster but they have the highest deadly accident rates in Thailand and this few minutes are not worth it.

The drive from Phuket to Krabi is on  a four lane highway via Phang Nga, what makes travel time from Phuket to Hat Yai so long is mainly because they stop continuously to pick up and drop passengers.

hat yai to phuket

With a bus via Krabi this stretch in south Thailand is an easy drive. Big and small coaches are leaving for Phuket / Krabi / Hat Yai almost every half hour. These are either big buses or vans. The best are the medium sized which start in Hat Yai opposite the Tesco Lotus mall and arrive at Phuket at the terminal 2 starting at both ends from 6 am until 9 pm.

Price is about Baht 400,- one way and travel time is up to 10 hours. The worst are the very big buses because they stop continuously. The best are the medium sized units since they only take about 7 hour and won’t stop often. Southwards bound is good organized because they didn't do it the usual chaotic way which means the made one terminal where buses leave and arrive. In Hat Yai there are around 5 terminals and really nobody knows where they leave, where to, when, if etc. its just the usual chaos in Thailand. The nbest on this day tour is some parts are through very beautiful areas.

In 2018 hey also finished most of the routing into a four lane highway the last piece between Trang and Patthalung was through a hilly region which was officially completed in 2018 the question now is will will it break open again since corruption and having the correct knowledge how to build roads makes almost every road to brake after about half a year.

The picture of the Phuket bus terminal for the Krabi Hat Yai and Bangkok bus is below from here also coaches for Satun, Ranong, Khao Lak even Pattaya and Koh Samui plus Chiang Mai is served.

Hat Yai is the travel hub for southern Thailand and Malaysia.

Hat Yai is the hub for southern Thailand travel including Phuket and there are several bus terminals for long distance and for local. But as usual there is chaos means main traffic from Hat Yai to the north such as to Krabi, Phuket, and Bangkok can leave from various stations and small travel agents who have a minibus or van parked in front of the office.

The main bus terminal in Hat Yai also has vans available which are faster but they never are on time and on top of it they always circle in the city until they are scram packed which easily can take more than an hour which finally means they win on the highway they lose in the city an irrational behavior.

When northwards bound, means starting in Hat Yai where there are 3 bigger bus terminals and about half a dozen smaller, there is absolute no cooperation between any of them.

That's the Thai Way, everyone works against each other and nobody cooperates. But all like one thing and this are the "farang" because they are an easier pray to cheat than the local. Be aware that in Thailand a foreigner is considered as a moving ATM machine on two legs.

The new Phuket Bus Terminal is at the outskirt of the town at the airport road.
If you want to fly between Phuket and Hat Yai or vice versa try Bangkok Air

But it wont make much sense because it costs about 4 - 6 times as much as the bus and when considering the time you are hanging around at the airport (driving there and waiting) it will be only about half the time as using the bus since the coach starts from the Phuket Bus Station which is in town.

So just get to the Phuket Bus Station by motorbike taxi (baht 100,-) or tuk-tuk (negotiate) there are no taxis and the coaches will depart almost every 45 minutes and take between 6-7 hours. Costs are Bath 400,- the red 38 seater buses or van and bigger buses are around Baht 370,-. The reason why it wont make sense to use the aircraft is because the time you safe you loose at the airport and driving to and from the airport.

The distance between the two cities is around 600 km when using the road via Krabi and Trang. Please use the comment section below to tell your experience and you will miss a pretty view of south Thailand with the aircraft.

On the road in Thailand.

Thai people are often very creative such as this bus modification doesn't it look nice? Actually, this bus had a disco in the upper back and the bass wobbled over the rest stop.

The road networks in ASEAN.

Thailand has probably the number one road network in ASEAN almost all through roads have four lanes but there is a real negative stuff they don't maintain the roads.

Once they build them they forget them and since the surfaces break after 2 years  either they dont know how to do it or they use bad material to make more profit. Corruption is rampant so they try to make even the worst tricks to cheat its sometime a shame to see that. But when pointing at it they smile and tell "ding dong farang", since Thai are in their opinion the most clever people in the universe and know everything better anyway you can imagine what that means.
