Khao Lak Beach Tour

Khao Lak Beach Weather and Map

Khao Lak is a pretty waterfront hundred kilometer north of Phuket with several luxury beach resorts behind the waterfront and some mid-range accommodation and budget hotels are between the through road and the hills this is a slim stretch of land just see the Khao Lak Map below.

Andaman Seafront hotels are often a bit isolated, there is no real town or village nearby. The area is a great destination if you like it calm or if you like scuba diving which means around Similan Islands Marine National Park that is one of the prime scuba diving destination in Asia.

The Similan Archipelago is one of the most attractive diving grounds in Asia but unfortunately, it was extensively overused and destroyed by local people (destroying the corals and littering the environment) who in turn blamed the tourists which is the usual nonsense tactic since when there is something wrong they always blame tourists and if none are around they blame the Myanmar's.

Actually the fact is that the archipelago is not allowed being accessed without Thai travel agents and tour guides they even have the HQ from the National Marine Park at the pier to control this. But as usual in Thailand they hang around chattering on the mobile phone playing computer games and eating the whole day at the Lam Ru pier.

Khao Lak Beach Tour

Khao Lak waterfront

Several luxury beach resorts are at the waterfront and some mid-range accommodation, budget hotels are between the through road and the hills, this is a slim stretch of land.

Most seafront hotels are very isolated, there is no real town or village nearby. The area is a great destination if you like it calm or if you like scuba diving which means around Similan Islands, Marine National Park. The area around is one of the prime scuba diving destination in Asia.

There are speed boats and other ships carrying divers to the dive grounds further west in the Andaman Sea, it's all good organized. Exploring the underwater world could be done either by a liveaboard trip out of Phuket or just book your Andaman Sea tour from your hotel direct.

The beaches along the coast and on the islands are wide and mostly clean with pine trees in the back there are some palms but usually a bit behind.

Andaman Sea Tour means exploring the waterfront and the islands offshore in the Indian Ocean actually there are plenty of possibilities either to join a group in a speed boat with up to about 25 passengers on a day tour to the famous Similan Islands

Similan Main Island

There is no possibility to stay overnight on the islands since this is a Thailand Marine National Park and they sometimes only allow a handful of Thai style cottages which are usually booked by other Thai people who have some connection to the manager who runs the site. Frankly, the few beach huts on the main island are not worth it. On top of you are at the mercy of the boat owners who will try to pull money from you.

Just try to book the tour at your hotel or a travel agent and come back to your hotel in the late afternoon. It's also not worth it to get to the Lam Ru pier where the boats/ships leave because there is a monopoly of the shipowner/travel agents and they won't take you unless booking a whole day tour.

The Khao Sok National Park Trip

That trip is not as monopolized they offer also day and other tours e.g. elephant trekking and there are plenty of hotels around they even offer tree houses.

For this, it needs to turn in at the first entrance to the National Park. They also have some houses on the rivers around and kayaking where the boats can be rented altogether a pretty place.

Now there are several possibilities to travel there either when in Khao Lak book a tour with a travel agent and they will pick you up and carry you to the place. Another way could take the local bus towards Surat Thani and exit at the National Park. Or rent a scooter for a few day and do it on your own but be extremely careful Thailand has after Zimbabwe the highest road accident fatalities in the world.

Just to imagine at the Songkran Weekend 2017 (Thailand New Year) they had over 400 people killed on the road the rest you can imagine yourself.

Phuket to Myanmar Journey Similan Island with the speed boat Phang Nga Bay Tour To Ranong Which means more fine and white northwards and a bit reddish and less fine towards the south but there is no much difference. Pine trees swing in the strong breeze hit by rain from time to time but to see that clearly there are almost no palm trees left unless the beach resorts have planted them (in Khao Lak they still have enough palm trees left.

Thai are often strange people they cut down one of their best assets along the Andaman Costs since they don't consider palm trees as now what? "Trees" so people can do whatever they want although it is strictly banned to cut leafy trees.

These waterborne activities are very popular because the coral reefs attract myriads of different fishes small and large. It includes whale sharks and other bigger animals such as stingrays and more around the archipelago.

Boat tour to the islands

There are speed boats and bigger ships carrying divers to the dive grounds further west about 40 km in the Andaman Sea, it's all good organized.

Exploring the underwater world could be done either by a life aboard trip out of Phuket or just book your Andaman Sea tour from your hotel. The picture above shows the Andaman Coast pictured from the south.

Similan Islands Pier at Lam Ru

The Lam Ru pier is about 5 km before the first of Khao Lak's villages on the through road when coming from Phuket

The clouds make the weather they stall on the hills behind the Khao Lak Beach front and long Village and bring the rain. This is all the way down from Myeik (Mergui) in Myanmar. Which means Khao Lak in Phang Nga Province north of Phuket receives more rain than the Island of Phuket.

The preferred dive area is around the Similan Islands. Practically every hotel offers some kind of dive tour. The Merlin Resort is at the south end of the long stretch of beaches and on the almost north end is the Meridien.

Some are expensive some are cheaper. The cheaper hotels are between the road and hill range, in the upper price category the beach resorts are closer to the waterfront. In general, it's a beach resort and scuba diving destination.

Similan islands are out in the Andaman Sea and Khao Sok National Park about 100 km to the northeast, behind Takuapa and on the way to Surat Thani. The Khao Sok National Park is the biggest in South Thailand and is built around the reservoir of a power station and a beautiful green part of Thailand with some rivers around for canoeing and kayaking. A real attraction is the floating cottages and elephant trekking several hotels offers to stay in tree houses.

Hotels and resorts are plenty since there is no bigger town in the area

Only the village at the south end and no real nightlife available, actually, there is one cabaret style nightclub.

Since there is no adult entertainment it quickly becomes boring in the evening. The ideal vacation destination for a family holiday, beach vacation and people who want to have a quiet life. Plus naturally scuba diving and snorkeling in the Similan Archipelago.

The whole area is in the grip of German and Scandinavian tourists or long stay and people enjoying their retirement time. During Christmas and new year, it becomes quite crowded and hotel prices move up steep.
