Railay Beach

Railay Beach at Ao Nang.

West Railay has the better beach front but both waterfronts east and west are spectacular spots in the ocean they are in Thailand's Krabi Province.

Railay BeachRailay Beach

It needs to see this waterfront together with Ao Nang since Railay Beach is an extension to the former. But before arriving at Ao Nang there is another touristic hot-spot which most travelers miss that is Ao Luk.

Making holiday travel and vacation around here in Krabi province keep in mind the equatoral sun can burn you immediately (its less than 1000 km to the equator) that needs some skin protection either with a good cream lotion or maybe with a full body cover. Just putting an umbrella into the sand at the beach wont help a lot since the reflection from the light sand and waterfront is overwhelming especially when a women stay rather pale and the kids should not be burned after an hour playing sun protection is needed that also works with a burkini

The place is quite popular because there are a couple of attractive beach resort around which are not so expensive either. The only negative is the cliff between Ao Nang and Railay Beach which makes it difficult to move around a interesting trip extension could be to Hat Yai near the Malaysian border.

Actually the another highlight is the towering limestone cliffs which are ideal for mountain climbing at the waterfront. There are several companies offering guided climbing tours around Railay Beach.

People like Railay for two reasons it's visually a beautiful place and as already indicated the spectacular rock climbing opportunities. This waterfront on Krabi's Andaman Coast offers beautiful nature for a reasonable price and that makes it a perfect match for an attractive visit into the south of Thailand.

Railay has plenty of accommodation options which are beach resort and cottages at the waterfront this are the higher price end places on the west side and with lower prices are available on the east side. When on a visit don't forget a to make a ride to Chicken Island (because the limestone cliff looks like a gigantic chicken).

Nearby is Ton Sai beach.

With more accommodations and a bit to the south is Fossil Shell Cemetery.   Around are the usual restaurants and bars when going for dinner have a look in the kitchen and ask if they use water from the bottle if not go elsewhere to avoid problems for the few days. They all serve the same Thai food which is quite good but it always needs to be vigilant on the hygienic subject.

Waterborne activities are many but best is snorkeling, high-end marine life and coral reefs are not so attractive.

Passing Ao Luk.

There is another very interesting spot at Ao Luk a few kilometers beyond Phang Nga City when coming from Phuket to Krabi.

In the mangroves are a couple of limestone caves with prehistoric cave paintings. I just wonder who certified this because in Thailand they fake everything as long as it brings cash.  Anyway it's an interesting place at the entrance to the mangrove forest is a huge restaurant. They also rent kayaks and a couple of longtail boats are around.

These boats are probably the best choices for a day trip because it's easy to get lost in this huge mangrove swamp and this will not happen with the boat driver. The longtail boat driver also functions as a guide and know exactly where the cave paintings are hidden so no need to waste time for a long search around. South Thailand and especially Krabi province is somehow like a big Emmentaler cheese. From here to Ao Phra Nang Beach it's about another two hours with the car or scooter.

If you ever come to this area let me tell you this is one of the most spectacular in Thailand. Not only because some of the oldest jungle is around here with rivers and waterfalls it's the mass of island beaches and excellent food which will bring you pleasure every day. If you rather like entertainment it could be better at Phuket where you can chase the pretty girls.

Actually they have the Thai ladies in the nightlife scene also around Railay Beach and Ao Nang but it's not Phuket. If you are a guy and want something special to do a side trip to Dannok at the Thai-Malaysian border is highly recommended. There are buses from Krabi town almost every hour to Hat Yai and from there to Danok. This small Thai city at the border is currently (2017) the hottest place for Thai girls in the nightlife business. It's even better than Phuket and/or Bangkok, why?

In this border town, they can do almost everything with women what has been shut down elsewhere since years and don't worry there are "girl friendly" hotels around in Railay Beach and Ao Nang plus elsewhere in the region.

Another option could be just take the bus train or van from anywhere in the south and use Ao Nang as a jump off to Phi Phi Islands stay a few days and return from there to Phuket. Krabi has an international Airport which receives flights from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Best is check with Air Asia. If you are a for adventure rent a scooter and roam around. Since this is a maybe dangerous idea because the locals and also the tourists drive around like "mad max" better get a very good travel insurance where they get you out in an emergency case, Thai doctors are not on a very top level.

Railay Beach comes in various forms since there is no real convention how to spell this there are variants such as "rai lay beach" "rai leh beach" and "Railay Beach".

Just hire a longtail boat at the waterfront where the road end, it's about 400 baht for a round-trip. The boatman will show you Railay west and east if you want to stop at one the sandy beaches just tell, it's a real beautiful tropical environment with lush green scenery and warm emerald colored waters, along with reasonable accommodation and cottages.

This is a rather small seaside village along the Ao Nang Beach the main street is the divider at one side are shops, restaurants, hotels and resorts plus bars where you can get everything what you need in your Krabi vacation.

The place is also ok for a weekend tour from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.  Since there are direct aircraft connections so no need to waste travel time. Check Air Asia or Tiger Air there might be some more they continuously change.

Ao Nang is also known for Krabi rock / cliff climbing.

There is no direct access from Ao Nang (where you arrive) to Railay Beach as the limestone cliffs are in between.

Actually rock climbing in Krabi made Railay Beach famous and since almost all activities are popular these days  the waterfront is perfect. But be careful since the slippery cliffs are not as easy to conquer. There are several tour companies around use them and you will avoid problems they are not as expensive. If you like visiting underwater attraction move to Khao Lak they have the Similan Archipelago in front one of the best diving ground on the globe.

Ao Nang is a great sea beach but rather a sunset beach but for sure one of the best Thailand beaches because of the spectacular scene the sand is crude

Tropical beaches in Thailand are plenty but can hardly match Railay Beach in Krabi Province you can see in this Ao Nang photo and pictures here. At my experience only some beaches at Similan Islands and the Ang Thong Marine National Park plus Phi Phi Islands and the Trang Archipelago in south Thailand can come close. Including the islands in the Tarutao Archipelago like Ko Lipe can match.

Krabi is a great vacation spot on top of it everything is quite cheap. Especially food, restaurants and transportation have low prices and the quality is quite good.

That's the same with the Krabi hotels and other accommodation. For about US 20,- to 30,- a good hotel room can be found. Want to stay longer ? Rent a Krabi apartment for around $ 150,- per month and up
