Ranong in Thailand

Ranong in Thailand.

Ranong is the most forested province in Thailand and borders direct to Myanamar (Burma) the city serves mainly two purposes first its home of Thailand's biggest fishing fleet and second the starting point for the Thailand - Myanmar "visa run" to Kawthaung.

Ranong Thailand

It could get global importance once maybe Thailand Myanmar and China could get together and build the Kra Isthmus Canal. In general a rather remote tourist destinations in southern Thailand actually they talk about Isthmus of Kra Project since decades but they are not able to get things done.

Foreigners know the city mainly because of the visa run to Kawthaung where the local harbor is the starting port. Ranong province is Thailand's least populated area and this has something to do with the weather, means rain. Right behind the coast are the blue mountains and the clouds coming in from the Indian Ocean empty their water on them and the coastal region.

From Ranong to Kawthaung.

Ranong serves mainly two purposes first its home of Thailand's biggest fishing fleet and second the starting point for the Thailand Myanmar "visa run" to Kawthaung.

Ranong is the biggest Thai harbor on the west coast and is dedicated to fishing vessels which come in and out every day. A good part what they bring into the city is carried in the night to Bangkok via refrigeration trucks.

The other business is the "visa run" and the people who like gambling at the Myanmar side where a Thai has set up a casino on a island just in front of Kawthaung, the harbor on the Myanmar side.
A would be business change in Asia the building of the Kra Canal over Myanmar and Thailand territory.

Isthmus of Kra

The Isthmus of Kra.

In the 17th Century the transports from Europe have been to Mergui today Myeik in Myanmar with the ship unloading onto the elephant over the hill range towards the Gulf of Thailand and from there loading again onto the ship and transported to the Capital of Siam which was Ayutthaya at that time and from there northwards to China and Japan.

Today this could be done much more efficient through the Isthmus of Kra Canal. But leaving it to politics nothing important is done. As we know China have their own ideas in this region of the world which is continuously coming up in South China Sea Conflicts. So lets wait and see what happen because this project is not buried yet and the key is for sure China but Singapore is absolutely opposing it because that would mean their harbor would have much less profit.

Phuket to Ranong.

This is the main routing in the south between Thailand and Myanmar to Kawthaung (under the British this was Victoria Point) which is the southernmost town of Burma (Myanmar) and heavy used in south Thailand for the visa run.

That happens when the Thai visa expires. But the traveler can still only use the local Myanmar visa for Kawthaung they still deny to travel further north from here (2018) unless having a visa for whole Myanmar but not a visa on arrival / from the Consulate in Bangkok or evisa from the internet. Although the immigration in Kawthaung is just as online as the immigration in Yangon they are just not able to use modern technology like the Thai, Malaysians, Philippines and so on. The bureaucrats in Naypyidaw are still sleeping in the oxcart age still making the same nonsense as 20 years ago they only call it differently.

From Phuket to Myanmar

The photo above shows the arrival in Kawthaung from Ranong this is a small island with a monastery on top just at the entrance to Kawthaung Harbor the longtail-boat is the ferry from Ranong which almost works every 30 minutes from around 9 am to 5 pm.
